K-9 Program in Policing

K9s are one of the most valuable tools we have in law enforcement—but they’re also much
more than that.
Throughout my career, I’ve had the opportunity to serve as a K9 handler at both the Eagle
County Sheriff’s Office and the Vail Police Department. That experience gave me a firsthand
understanding of how effective these teams are, whether it’s locating suspects, tracking missing persons, or detecting narcotics.
But just as important as their capabilities is the bond between a handler and their K9. It takes
time, training, and trust to build a team that can perform at a high level when it matters most.
K9 teams also play a unique role in connecting with the community. They’re often a positive and approachable way for people—especially kids—to engage with law enforcement.
As Sheriff, I will continue to support and strengthen our K9 program by investing in training,
resources, and the deputies who dedicate themselves to this work.
It’s one of the many ways we can improve both public safety and community connection.
